Highlights

Between May 2023 and December 2023, the City of Springfield collected thousands of surveys about the St. Johns Park Community Center project. Here’s where we landed when comparing how well our surveys matched what the Census says about who lives here:

  • Our community engagement consultant collected nearly 5,000 surveys along with another 360 from the credible messengers in WIATT
  • Residents who identify as White and/or wealthy were over-represented in the surveys
  • Residents who identify as Black or African American, Hispanic or Latinx, low income, or ages 18 to 29 years old were under-represented in the surveys
  • The WIATT credible messengers were successful in getting a majority of their surveys from Black or African American, Hispanic or Latinx, and/or lower income residents

How did we do at reaching under-heard voices and those who experienced past harms?

At the beginning of this project, we examined past survey data and identified three populations who have been historically left out of past planning processes:

  • Residents in Jones Park
  • Latina mothers with young children
  • Black or African American residents

Working with our credible messengers, we developed targeted outreach plans to hear directly from these residents. Here’s how we did at collecting their input.

Lives in Jones Park

We've heard from 11 people who live in Jones Park out of our goal of 42.

Black or African American

We've heard from 125 Black or African American residents out of our goal of 75.

Latina Mothers

We've heard from 87 Latina mothers out of our goal of 152.
